How We Change Over Time - The Time Machine (1960)

The Time Machine was a novel written by HG. Wells in 1894 and would be adapted into a film in 1960 directed by George Pal.

The film stays true to its source material, offering a story about time travel which at the risk of being confusing to audiences, does not fall down that path and is easy to understand. Rod Taylor stars in the leading role as the time traveller and his change in behaviour when journeying from his own timeline into the future gives audiences an understanding as to the kind of effect time travelling is having on him and the reactions he has towards the different generations and societies he comes across, ranging from enthusiasm, excitement and disappointment. The effect of time travelling is helped out with the use special effects and set design which made the film ahead of its time. Not only did these effects assist with allowing the time travel story to take hold and help Rod Taylor’s character development but possibly contributed to changing cinema in general. The 1950s-70s saw the slow popularity of not only Science Fiction films but special effects which would later be used in such films as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Star Wars.

The Time Machine is a must see not just for Science Fiction fans, all movie goers alike.
